LA JOLLA, Calif. - Chase Frishman, a four-year standout libero on the UC San Diego men’s volleyball team from 2010-13 who ranks No. 2 in program history in career digs with 674, is currently competing professionally overseas in Switzerland.
Frishman is playing for TSV Jona, a club located in Rapperswil-Jona, about 30 minutes southeast of Zurich. Staying with a local family, the Dana Point native is playing mostly outside hitter and some opposite for head coach Urs Winteler.
TSV Jona competes in the NLB (National League B), going up against sides from Lucerne, Bern, Geneva, etc., and is aiming to gain promotion to the NLA at the conclusion of the current campaign, which began on Oct. 19 and runs through April.
“Switzerland’s awesome,” offered Frishman in checking in recently via email with ninth-year UCSD head coach Kevin Ring. “I even got a chance to go to Oktoberfest, which was great. I’m on my way to St. Moritz today. Doesn’t get much better.”
Added Frishman about his day-to-day activities, “In my free time, I am coaching girl’s and boy’s teams five times a week, taking a German course in Zurich, and traveling as much as I can.”
The 2014 season for Ring’s current Tritons begins on Jan. 3-4 at the UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational. The home opener is set for a 7 p.m. first serve inside RIMAC Arena on Saturday, Jan. 18, against 2013 national runner-up BYU.
