REDLANDS, Calif. - Senior Luke Calkins' two third-place finishes highlighted the UC San Diego divers’ day Saturday at the Bulldog Invite on the campus of the University of Redlands.
Calkins began his afternoon on the three-meter springboard, totaling 261.85 points to finish behind Lester Wright (355.95) of UC Santa Barbara and James Stevick (307.75) of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Teammates Adam Springer (238.10) and Garet Webster (203.35) were sixth and 10th, respectively, out of 19 entrants.
Out of 20 participants later on one-meter, Calkins scored 236.35, again behind only Wright (332.60) and Stevick (288.75). Springer, a junior, was seventh (196.50) and Webster, a sophomore, 11th (180.00). Wright had also swept both boards in UCSB’s dual-meet victory at home over UCSD just one week prior on Nov. 9.
In the one-meter event to start the women’s competition, senior Natalie Mouzooni produced a mark of 182.80 for 10th place to lead a group of four Tritons. Junior Megan Zeeb (20th, 169.25), sophomore Allyson Cohen (23rd, 153.05) and junior Liz Bird (25th, 146.60) also performed among 36 total divers, with Mathilda Dankler (258.55) of the University of San Diego the winner.
Zeeb was the top UCSD finisher from three meters, in 13th at 185.15. Cohen was 16th (178.40), Mouzooni 24th (150.65) and Bird 27th (134.35). UCSB’s Hannah Tomp (260.55) edged Dankler (251.30) for first out of 31.
The UCSD diving contingent will now be idle from competition until a road date at San Diego State on Dec. 30. The Triton swimmers head to Monterey Park this week for the annual Arena Invitational, hosted by UCSD again this year, but at East Los Angeles College for the first time. The meet runs Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 21-23.
