SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – UC San Diego suffered an overtime defeat to league-favorite Cal State San Bernardino, 77-73, Thursday night at Coussoulis Arena. The Tritons received a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds from Drew Dyer, while James McCann scored 19 points for UCSD in the loss.

The Tritons fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while CSUSB improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

“I thought we played hard,” said head coach Eric Olen. “We gave ourselves a chance to win versus a very good team on the road. Ultimately they made a few more plays but we will learn from this game and improve so that we are able to take advantage of the next opportunity.”

UCSD grabbed a late 61-59 lead following a MacKenzie McCullough layup with 25 seconds remaining, but the Wildcats responded with a dunk from Tevin Harris to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra period, the Tritons were outscored 9-4 in the opening minutes before eventually falling 77-73.

Dyer recorded a career-high 14 rebounds on the night, eight on the offensive end, while shooting 7-16 from the floor en route to his game-high 22 points. McCann finished 6-18 from the field and also dished out six assists and grabbed six rebounds in the losing effort.

As a team, the Tritons were held to a field goal percentage of 38 percent on 24-63 shooting and 25 percent from behind the arc, making seven of 27 attempts. UCSD turned the ball over 17 times that led to 14 points for the Wildcats and only created three points off CSUSB’s 12 turnovers. Each team grabbed 42 boards, but the difference in the game proved to be the 20 points of the bench for CSUSB to UCSD’s three bench points.

The Wildcats opened the game on a 9-2 run, the largest lead of the night for San Bernardino, before the Tritons closed the half strong to trail by two, 29-27. UCSD led 23-17 at the 4:59 mark following a layup from Adam Klie to mark the largest lead of the night for the Tritons.

UCSD and CSUSB battled throughout the second half, as the Tritons shot 41 percent from the floor to score 34 points, while the Wildcats poured in 32 points on 39 percent shooting from the field. The Tritons grabbed a three-point lead with 1:13 to play following a McCann layup before the Wildcats tied the game at 59, which was followed by the McCullough and Harris exchange to force overtime.

In the extra period, CSUSB was too much to handle after shooting 60 percent from the field and nailing a pair of threes. The Tritons cut the deficit to one with 1:23 to go, but San Bernardino closed the game on a 7-4 run to win, 77-73.

McCullough added 11 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Aleks Lipovic scored nine points for UCSD in the loss, respectively.

The Wildcats had five players score in double digits, led by 18 from Kirby Gardner. CSUSB’s Tevin Harris (12), Juan Martinez (11), Lacy Haddock (15) and Joshua Gouch (10) also scored in double digits in the win.

UCSD closes out the month of November with a pair of home games next week. On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the Tritons host St. Katherine College (7 p.m.) and then entertain Academy of Art on Saturday, Nov. 30 (1 p.m.).
