UCSD Sweeps Weekend With 70-66 Topping of Cal State L.A.
Release: Saturday 01/25/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Drew Dyer led all players with 22 points and James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) recorded his second consecutive double-double as the UC San Diego men's basketball team defeated Cal State L.A., 70-66, Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.

The victory moved UCSD to 9-7 overall and 5-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). It completed a weekend sweep as the Tritons downed Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday by a score of 80-59.

Dyer was 7-for-13 from the field with five three-pointers, one short of his career-high. He also chipped in with seven rebounds.

McCann finished with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. In Friday's win against CSUDH, the senior guard recorded 12 points and doled out 10 helpers. He now has 411 career assists and needs just four more to become UCSD's all-time leader during the school's NCAA Division II era (since the 2000-01 season).

Freshman Adam Klie had 15 points, going 8-for-11 from the charity stripe while also adding six boards, an assist and a block. Hunter Walker led the Tritons on the boards with eight rebounds.

Cal State L.A. got a double-double out of Duce Zaid, who had 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Quinton Watkins had 18 points and Aaron Alston added 10 with eight boards for the Golden Eagles.

For the game, UCSD shot 41.5 percent (22-53) and CSULA hit just 33.8 percent (22-65) of its attempts.

The Golden Eagles led by a point, 28-27, at halftime in a game that saw 10 lead changes in the opening half of play.

Dyer kicked off the second half with a three-pointer to put the Tritons up 30-28 and they would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the night. A layup and free throw by Klie with 9:19 left in the game gave UCSD a 14-point cushion, its largest of the night, at 57-43.

The Golden Eagles chipped away at the deficit and a layup by Watkins with only 15 seconds remaining got them back within three points at 69-66. Klie was quickly fouled on the ensuing possession and he made one of two free throws, making it a four-point game. Cal State L.A. got off a pair of three-point attempts in the final nine seconds, but neither found the bottom of the net.

CSULA dropped to 10-6 overall and 7-5 in league games.

UCSD begins the second half of its CCAA season at home next week, hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Jan. 31, and Humboldt State on Saturday, Feb. 1. Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at RIMAC Arena.
