Release: Monday 02/03/2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Kirsten Willmon of the 21st-ranked UC San Diego softball team has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 2. The announcement was made Monday by the league office.

Willmon helped lead UCSD to a four-game sweep of Western Oregon at home last week. She led the Tritons in hits (9), doubles (1), total bases (12), triples (1) and runs scored (5) in the four wins.

In the opening game of the year, the senior powered a UCSD comeback win in the final two innings of play. Willmon started the sixth inning with a single and scored a few batters later to get the Tritons on the scoreboard. She capped off the game with an RBI walk-off triple to the right-center gap to give UCSD the 4-3 win. She finished with a weekend-best three hits in the opener, with a run scored and an RBI.

Willmon followed with a two-hit, one run, RBI and stolen base performance in game two. She also recorded a sacrifice bunt to set-up the first run of the game in the 11-3 win.

In Sunday’s doubleheader, Willmon scored the first run of the opener and finished with two hits in the 9-5 win. In the final game of the series, the Elk Grove native scored a pair of runs and knocked a pair of hits, including a double.

The two-hole sparkplug finished the weekend with a .646 batting average, .857 slugging percentage, .646 on-base percentage, two RBI and one stolen base in 14 at-bats.

It marks the first such career award for Willmon.

As part of their 18-game homestand to start the year, the Tritons host California Baptist on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in a doubleheader at Triton Softball Field. The non-conference match-up is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
