SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego men's basketball standout James McCann has been honored as a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for January. The announcement was made Tuesday by the SDHOC.
For the month, McCann led UCSD in total points (156), scoring average (17.3 points/game), field goals made (48), field goals attempted (106), free throws made (50), free throws attempted (63), total rebounds (44), total assists (56), assists average (6.2), total minutes (307) and minutes average (34.1/game). He shot .453 overall from the field.
The senior point guard scored at least 12 points in all nine games played and totaled 20-plus points on three occasions. McCann recorded two double-doubles and set single game career-highs in free throws made (10), free throws attempted (14) and rebounds (10).
McCann, a Carlsbad native out of La Costa Canyon High School, also made history, tying UCSD’s career assists record on Jan. 31 against 23rd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. He broke the record with his 415th helper on Feb. 1 against Humboldt State at RIMAC Arena.
Nine UCSD student-athletes earned a total of 10 San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month awards in 2013. Swimmer Anji Shakya was named a Star of the Year after winning an NCAA national title in the 200 freestyle. All honorees will be recognized at the 68th Annual Salute to the Champions on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Town and Country Convention Center.
