SEASIDE, Calif. - James McCann scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough as the UC San Diego men's basketball team was defeated by Cal State Monterey Bay, 70-57, Friday night at The Kelp Bed.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for UCSD, which dropped to 12-9 on the year and 8-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Now on a three-game roll of its own, CSUMB improved to 9-11 overall and 7-10 in the conference.
Though the lead changed eight times in the game - all in the first half - the Tritons never led by more than two points. With the score tied 15-15 with 6:57 remaining in the opening half, Ryan Nitz made a layup that put CSUMB in front for the rest of the night.
The Otters were ahead 30-22 at the break and led by as many as 15 in the second half when a Nitz jumper at 3:07 made the score 59-44.
UCSD made just 33% (19-57) of its shots on the night and only 61% (14-23) of its free throws.
The Otters shot 49% (24-49), which included a 57% (13-23) clip in the second half. They got 29 points from their bench players.
McCann was 8-for-15 with a three-pointer. He also added a game-high nine rebounds, three assists and a steal in 37 minutes of play. Hunter Walker contributed with 14 points, eight boards, a block and two steals.
Four Otters had 10 or more points, including Devin Murphy (18), Nitz (15), Alex Fertig (14) and Isaiah Smith (10). Murphy made three of his four three-point attempts.
The teams split the regular season series as UCSD took a 93-70 victory in La Jolla on Jan. 11.
