Tritons Cruise Past Holy Names, 8-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 14 UC San Diego men's tennis team earned an 8-1 decision over Holy Names Sunday in its final match of three straight at home. UCSD improved to 8-4 overall while HNU fell to 1-4.

The near-sweep for the Tritons included doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and victories at all six spots on the singles ladder.

UCSD's singles wins came in straight sets. In the No. 1 spot, Max Jiganti defeated Brook Workeneh by scores of 7-6 and 6-0. At No. 2, Rajeev Herekar took down Andrew Amor, 6-2 and 6-4. Ganesh Alagappan won, 6-1 and 6-2, against Rafael Martinez at No. 3.

Also posting singles wins for the Tritons were Horea Porutiu at No. 4, Mark Meyer at No. 5 and Andrew Malozsak at No. 6.  

The duo of Porutiu and Alexandre Miaule began the day with a solid 8-2 win against Ivan Parra and Jonah Tahilan in the No. 3 doubles spot. Jiganti and Luu followed with an 8-5 victory against Workeneh and Matthew Halligan at No. 1.

Martinez and Amor picked up the Hawks’ lone win of the morning, defeating Herekar and Meyer, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

Next up, the Tritons will compete at the 125th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, held Feb. 27-March 2 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
