No. 15 UCSD’s Nine-Game Conference Win Streak Snapped Following Day Split with SFSU
Release: Saturday 04/11/2014
by UCSD
SAN FRANCISCO – No. 15 UC San Diego had its nine-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win streak snapped at SFSU Softball Field as the Tritons and San Francisco State split the Friday doubleheader. UCSD fell in the opener 1-0 before earning a win in game two, 3-1.

The Tritons stands at 29-8 overall and 18-4 in CCAA play following the split. The loss puts UCSD in a tie for first place with Cal State Monterey Bay atop the conference. SFSU moves to 16-29 overall and 6-19 in league play.

Game One
The Tritons, the conference’s top hitting team, were limited to a pair of hits from Callie Grant as SFSU received a complete game from Megan Clark inside the circle in the opener. Clark finished with one strikeout and only allowed Grant to reach base on the two hits, while throwing 62 pitches en route to her seventh victory of the year.

UCSD had a pair of opportunities to score, but was unable to record a hit with a runner in scoring position. Grant led off the game with a single and reached third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but the Gators escaped with a groundout to end the threat. The final chance came in the top of the third after a two-out triple from Grant. She was stranded on third following a fly out to center field.

Alexis Edwards took the hard-luck loss to fall to 16-3 on the season. It was her first loss since Mar. 25, which included a time frame of seven appearances. The lefty allowed three hits, one earned run and four strikeouts in six innings.

The Gators got to the sophomore in the bottom of the third to score the would-be game-winning run on two hits. Aryn Guzman led off the inning with a single to right field and was brought home on a two-out double from Jennifer Lewis, the team leader in RBI.

After the Grant triple in the third, UCSD was retired in order for 13-straight batters. The shutout for the offense marks the first time in 2014. The two hits from Grant improved her team-high multi-hit games to 17.

Game Two
The nightcap also featured a pitching duel as Jennifer Manuel picked up her sixth win of the year with a complete-game. The offense backed her with a two-run sixth to power UCSD to the 3-1 victory.

After eight straight scoreless innings for the offense, UCSD finally jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Katie Saunders opened the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. After stealing third with two outs, Kirsten Willmon singled through the right side on a 1-0 pitch to plate the run and put UCSD ahead 1-0.

SFSU answered in the bottom half with a run on two hits. The Gators recorded back-to-back two-out doubles to knot the game at one as the game approached the third.

After three shutout innings from each side, the Tritons managed to get to SFSU’s Jenny Obbema in the top of the sixth for two runs on two hits and a pair of Gator errors. Caitlin Brown singled to start the rally with one out and was advanced to second by Saunders, who reached on an error.  Mya Romero loaded the bases with a single to left field before the Tritons plated the pair of runs on a Gator error and a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Alissa Gutierrez to make the score 3-1.

The Tritons finished off the victory by retiring the final nine Gators at the plate.

Manuel allowed six hits, one earned run and recorded one strikeout in her first complete game of the year. She lowered her ERA to 2.75 in the win.

The offense was led by two hits from Brown and an RBI apiece from Willmon and Gutierrez. Saunders stole her fifth base of the year and Willmon also snagged a bag for her sixth of the season.

UCSD and SFSU continue the CCAA set tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday’s contest is San Francisco State’s annual Strikeout Cancer day. There will be a ceremonial first pitch thrown before the game. All proceeds from the contest will go towards the Susan G Komen foundation.
