No. 15 UCSD Splits CCAA Series With San Francisco State After 1-1 Day

SAN FRANCISCO – No. 15 UC San Diego split the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader Saturday at SFSU Softball Field against San Francisco State to split the set 2-2. The Tritons recorded 15 hits in the opener to win 8-2 before falling 2-1 in the finale in a 13-inning marathon.

UCSD stands at 30-9 overall and 19-5 in CCAA play following the day split. The Tritons are still tied for first place in conference following a Cal State Monterey Bay loss against Chico State. SFSU moves to 17-30 overall and 8-20 in league play.

Saturday’s game was San Francisco State’s annual Strikeout Cancer game. Both head coaches had their mothers in attendance to throw out a ceremonial first pitch in honor of being cancer survivors.

Game One
The Tritons recorded their 20th multi-hit effort this season as the offense propelled UCSD to the 8-2 win.

The offense wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard and scored three times in the opening inning and four times in the second to lead 7-0 after a pair of innings.

Callie Grant led off the game with a walk and was advanced to second by Amani Proctor, who reached on an error by the Gators. Mya Romero followed with an RBI single and Emma Schneider plated the final two tallies with a single up the middle.

In the second, UCSD scored four runs on five hits and one Gator error. The inning was highlighted by five consecutive hits from the Tritons to plate the four runs. Proctor tripled home an RBI, Caitlin Brown nailed an RBI single up the middle, Romero doubled in an RBI, Bianca Devoto singled up the middle for an RBI and Schneider singled up the middle before the inning concluded to put UCSD ahead 7-0.

After the Gators plated a pair of runs in the third, the Tritons shut down SFSU the final four frames to earn the win. UCSD added a late run on an Proctor RBI single to make the 8-2.

The offense was led by three hits, two RBI and two runs from Proctor. Romero and Schneider also knocked in a pair of runs and recorded two hits, respectively. Brown and Emily McQuaid tallied two hit in the win as well.

McQuaid stole three bases, a co-season high in a game this season for the Tritons, to put her career total at 63.

Alexis Edwards earned her 17th win of the season after throwing four innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs while striking out three. Jennifer Manuel threw the final three innings of shutout ball. She allowed two hits and walked one.

Game Two
The finale featured a pitching duel between SFSU’s Megan Clark and UCSD’s duo of Manuel and Edwards. The Gators outlasted UCSD in 13 innings to earn a walk-off win, 2-1.

The Tritons scored in the opening frame to grab a quick 1-0 lead. Grant singled through the left side to open the inning and was brought home on an RBI double to left center from Brown. The senior improved her team-leading RBI total to 32.

UCSD held the Gators scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. SFSU knotted the game at one after a lead-off walk and an RBI double to right center.

The score remained 1-1 for 6.5 innings before the Gators finally got to Edwards in the bottom of the 13th. Selina Rodriguez delivered a two-out single to center field to plate the winning run and salvage the series split.

Grant led the Triton offense with three hits and a run scored. Brown, Alissa Gutierrez, McKenna Clewett and McQuaid finished with a pair of hits each. UCSD finished with 12 hits, but stranded 11 runners on base.

The Tritons had a chance to take the lead in the 12th but stranded McQuaid at third, who singled to lead off the inning.

Edwards was tagged with the loss and falls to 17-4 on the season. She threw 7.1 innings in relief and allowed one earned run on four hits, while striking out two. Manuel started the game and concluded her day with a line of 5.1 innings, three hits, one earned run and struck out four.

The 13 inning game marked the first extra-inning game for the Tritons this season.

UCSD stays on the road for CCAA play next week against No. 9 Humboldt State in Arcata. The four-game set is scheduled for two doubleheaders on Friday, Apr. 18 (1 p.m.) and Saturday, Apr. 19 (11 a.m.).
