Troy Cruz Chosen Among San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for April
Release: Wednesday 05/05/2014
by UCSD

SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego baseball standout Troy Cruz was named late last week as a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for April.

Cruz, a sophomore and local product out of Chula Vista and Bonita Vista High School, hit a team-best .435 (20-for-46) with 12 runs, four doubles, two triples, 10 RBI, three steals and a team-high .609 slugging percentage over 12 starts in the month to lead UCSD to a 12-3 overall record, including a 10-2 mark in league play and 8-3 on the road.

As if that weren’t enough, the two-way performer also went a perfect 4-0 in four mound starts with a 1.38 ERA over a team-best 26.0 innings pitched. Cruz twirled his first collegiate shutout, and first by a Triton in 2014, in a 2-0 seven-inning road defeat of conference foe Cal State L.A. on April 5. He then also earned the winning decision on the mound in a 6-4 victory at San Francisco State on April 19. UCSD clinched a spot in the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament with that result.

A first-time SDHOC honoree, Cruz joins swimmers Nicholas Korth (March), Paul Li (February) and Anji Shakya (March), water polo senior Sarah Lizotte (February) and men’s basketball senior point guard James McCann (January) to give UCSD six Stars of the Month for the 2014 calendar year.

Cruz, the 2013 CCAA Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-CCAA pick at utility, was one of seven amateurs chosen for April. Among three professionals was Boston Marathon winner and San Diego native Meb Keflezighi.

The 18th-ranked Tritons head north by bus to Stockton this Wednesday for the 2014 CCAA Championship. The double-elimination tournament runs Thursday through Saturday or Sunday at Banner Island Ballpark, home of the Stockton Ports, the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball. As the third seed, UCSD opens up against second-seeded and ninth-ranked rival Chico State on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The San Diego Hall of Champions honors outstanding athletes from San Diego, as well as athletes who have achieved stardom for local teams.
