UCSD Moves Into Tie for Eighth at NCAA Regional

AUSTIN, Texas - The UC San Diego men's golf team improved its play by eight strokes in Tuesday's second round and is now tied for eighth place of 20 squads at the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

UCSD shot a 9-over par 297 Tuesday after recording a 305 in Monday's opening round on the par-72, 6,909-yard layout. The Tritons were in 11th place at the end of play Monday.

Host St. Edward's took over the team lead after shooting a 294 Tuesday for a two-round total of 585. Western New Mexico is second (588) and Cal State Monterey Bay, which led after the first round, is third (590).

UC San Diego is just five strokes behind Chico State, which is in sixth place. The top six teams from the regional move on to the National Championship, which will be held May 19-23 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.

Individually, Lewis Simon is UCSD's top player. The senior shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday to go along with his 77 Monday, putting him in a tie for 22nd. He is the lone Triton to card an under-par round at the tourney so far. Simon had five birdies, nine pars and four bogeys on the day.

Enrique Livas of St. Edward's and Colin Prater from Colorado Mesa are tied for the individual lead, each with a 1-under 144 through two rounds. Prater was tied for seventh and Livas was tied for fifth after the first round. Three players are currently tied for third at even par.

Also in the Triton lineup are Clayton Yamaguchi (T-26th, 149), Daniel Yang (T-26th, 149), Jeff Roseth (T-80th, 159) and Jay Lim (T-104th, 167). Roseth improved by five strokes Tuesday, carding a 77 after an 82 Monday.

The Tritons tee off at 10:50 a.m. (Pacific) Wednesday in the tournament's third and final round. They will be paired with Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines.

Wednesday's action will be covered by live scoring. In addition, live video on holes nine and 18 will be streamed.
