Varsity 8 Wins Petite Final at Dad Vail Championships in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA - With a win in the Varsity 8 petite final, the seventh-ranked University of California San Diego women's rowing team concluded action Saturday at the Dad Vail Championships on the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania.

UC San Diego's Varsity 8 crew recorded a winning time of 7:27.03 to top the four-boat field in the petite final. The Tritons were over four seconds faster than second-place Merrimack, which came in at 7:31.76. Philadelphia placed third with a time of 7:46.43 and Charleston was fourth in 8:00.88.

UCSD's Varsity 4 missed out on a berth in the grand final after placing sixth in a repechage heat, posting a time of 8:00.56. Central Oklahoma, ranked second nationally, won the heat in 7:38.85. Florida Tech also earned a spot in the grand final, finishing second in 7:41.65. No. 8 Humboldt State was third, No. 4 Mercyhurst placed fourth and Philadelphia was fifth.

UC San Diego will now wait to see if it has qualified for the NCAA Championships. The selections will be announced on May 16 at 2 p.m. PT.
