RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's rowing team won two races and the Varsity 8 crew finished third as the Western Sprints Championships were contested Saturday on Lake Natoma.
UC San Diego's Second Varsity 8 took first in a four-boat race, recording a winning time of 6:17.8. Second-place Gonzaga was six seconds slower, coming in at 6:23.4. The University of San Diego (6:26.3) was third and Santa Clara (6:29.7) finished fourth.
The Tritons' Third Varsity 8 boat also won its race handily, crossing the finish line in 6:24.6. Gonzaga was nine seconds behind in 6:33.0 and Santa Clara took third with a time of 6:35.5.
Santa Clara was the clear winner in the Varsity 8 event with a time of 6:08.6. However, it was an epic battle for second as Oklahoma City edged UC San Diego by just 0.2 seconds in a photo finish. OKC came in at 6:14.0 with UCSD just behind in 6:14.2. Gonzaga (6:18.7) was fourth and the University of San Diego (6:22.3) rounded out the placing in fifth.
