Tritons Take Team Victory at Johnson Shootout
Release: Tuesday 09/20/2016

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - Competing in its first tournament of the 2016-17 season, the University of California San Diego men's golf team turned in a commanding performance, winning by 17 strokes Tuesday at the Johnson Shootout, hosted by Cal State Dominguez Hills at Industry Hills Golf Club. It was the team's first victory since 2002.

UC San Diego led wire-to-wire, finishing with a team total of 870, 18-over par. The Tritons shot a 295 in Tuesday's third and final round to go along with a 286 and a 289 on Monday.

The 870 was the lowest three-round score for the Tritons since totaling an 864 at the Sonoma State Invitational in October of 2012.

"I was really proud of our team today," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "The course played tougher than yesterday and we got off to a poor start, but we bounced back and played well coming down the stretch."

Individually, UCSD had three players finish in the top-10, led by freshman Hayden Hui's third-place showing. In his collegiate debut, Hui went 71-69-77 for a 4-over 217. He dropped two spots after finishing Monday in a tie for first place.

Freshman Jacob Johnson tied for seventh (73-76-71--220) and junior Mateusz Kucz tied for ninth (70-79-72--221). Rounding out the Triton contingent were freshman Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (72-75-75--222) in 12th and sophomore Jake Haselden (77-69-79--225) in 17th.

The second-round 69s shot by Haselden and Hui were among just three rounds below 70 during the tournament.

"It was a great team effort with all five guys contributing significantly," said Ragan. "Today, Jacob and Mateusz posted two good rounds to seal the win for us."

The individual medalist was Andrew Fernandes of Cal State Dominguez Hills, who led the 34-player field with his 1-under 212 (70-70-72). He was the only competitor to finish under par.

Trailing UC San Diego, in order, were Sonoma State (887), Stanislaus State (890), Cal State San Bernardino (890), Cal State Dominguez Hills (896) and Whittier (1052). All of the competing squads except for Whittier hail from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The last tournament win for UCSD came in February of 2002 when it topped an 11-team field at the Point Loma Invitational at Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego.

The Tritons continue their season at Chico State's Wildcat Classic, held Oct. 3-4 at Butte Creek Country Club.
