CHICO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team placed 12th of 16 schools Tuesday at the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic, hosted by Chico State at Butte Creek Country Club.

UC San Diego finished with a 54-hole stroke total of 904, 40-over par. The Tritons shot a 300 in Tuesday's third and final round to go along with a 298 and a 306 Monday. UCSD was tied for fifth after 18 holes and tied for 11th following two rounds of play.

"The team bounced back and played better today," said UC San Diego head coach Jim Ragan. "We have some work to do in order to achieve the consistency we need for success."

The top scoring player for UCSD was sophomore Jake Haselden, who tied for 36th with an 8-over 224 on the par-72, 6,881-yard course. Haselden shot 73-79-72, with his third round total the lowest posted by any Triton over the two-day tourney.

Also on course for UCSD were Mateusz Kucz (75-75-75--225, T-42nd), Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (74-76-77--227, T-51st), Hayden Hui (80-76-78--234, T-74th) and Jacob Johnson (76-85-76--237, T-80th). Kucz is a junior while Navigato, Hui and Johnson are freshmen.

Senior Drew Robbins, playing as an individual and not figuring in the team scoring, finished tied for 31st with a 223 (73-75-75). It was his first outing of the season.

Sixth-ranked Chico State won the team title in a tiebreaker over Western Washington. Both squads finished with a 13-over 877, but the Wildcats had a lower total when the team's throw-away scores were added.

California Baptist, ranked 12th nationally, came in third with an 879, 15-over par.

Nic Beno of Colorado School of Mines was the individual medalist, topping the 91-player field with a 2-under par 214. Beno shot 71-71-72, holding onto the lead which he co-owned following the conclusion of Monday's pair of rounds.

Andrew Fernandes of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Kyle McLay of Holy Names tied for second place, just one stroke behind Beno.

UC San Diego concludes its fall slate Oct. 17-18 at the Otter Fall Invitational, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at Bayonet in Seaside.
