Release: Friday 10/21/2016

LA JOLLA, Calif. - For the second time this week, the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team was involved in a five-set match, coming out on the losing end to Humboldt State Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

Scores of the back-and-forth California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest were 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-13 in favor of the visiting Lumberjacks. UC San Diego's overall record dipped to 11-9, while its league mark fell to 8-4. HSU improved to 10-9 and 5-6.

UCSD senior outside hitter Meagan Wright (Bonita/Bonita Vista HS) produced a match-high 21 points off of 19 kills and four block assists while also contributing eight digs and three assists.

Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) had 15 kills, 15 digs, three assists and two aces, while Simone Froley and Jessica Rieble each had 10 points. Froley hit .389 with nine kills and Rieble totaled seven kills and five blocks (one solo).

UC San Diego hit .123 as a team with 58 kills and 36 errors in 179 attack attempts.

Three Lumberjacks finished with 10 or more kills including Symone Hayden (18), Nicole Bewley (14) and Alex Lolland (11). Hayden notched a double-double by adding 15 digs.  Sarah Shively led all players defensively with 18 digs and Bewley and Alondra Haro each had eight blocks.

Humboldt State hit .169 (62-31-183) and out-blocked UC San Diego 18-10.

The Jacks never trailed in the fifth set as the Tritons tied it up twice at 2-2 and 13-13 but could not find a lead. Down 12-7, UCSD scored three straight points, all on HSU attack errors, to get back within two. Humboldt took the next point with a block, but UC San Diego evened it up with another three-point run, during which Colla had a kill and a block. However, Bewley put down a kill to get the Lumberjacks to match point and a Triton attack error ended it.

Friday's match was UCSD's fifth five-setter of the season and the team is now 1-4 in matches that go the distance. The Tritons defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in five sets Tuesday on the road.

Next week, UC San Diego plays at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Oct. 28 and hosts Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Oct. 29 for Senior Night. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. starts.
