The University of California San Diego men's and women's cross country teams will travel NCAA West Regionals, held at Amend Park in Billings, Mont., and try to earn an invitation the NCAA Championships on Sat., Nov. 19, in St. Leo, Fla. The top five men's teams and first six women's squads will receive a ticket to the national meet.
HOW TO QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
The top six teams on the women's side and first five men's teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships. Individually, any runner finishing in the top five will also receive a ticket for the national meet. Beyond that, the top three individuals not on qualifying teams will receive their invitation to the NCAA Championships.
The UCSD men are ranked 11th in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll. For full national rankings, click here.
The field is made up of schools in the west region including five nationally ranked teams in No. 4 Chico State, No. 6 Alaska Anchorage, No. 9 Cal Poly Pomona, No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 16 California Baptist on the men's side. No. 7 Chico State, No. 9 California Baptist, No. 11 Alaska Anchorage, No. 18 Point Loma and No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona are schools that are nationally rated on the women's side.

AT THE CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Triton men took third at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships on Oct. 22. UCSD collected 69 points, being narrowly edged out by Cal Poly Pomona who amassed 67 points. No. 4 Chico State won the CCAA title for the 15th straight year with 20 points. Seniors Tareq Alwafai and Brendan Gee, and sophomore Aren Johnson received All-CCAA honors by placing in the top 15.
The Triton women finished fourth with 124 points, behind Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus State. Karina Carstens earned her second straight All-CCAA award after placing 15th individually.
HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA
Former Triton student-athlete Nate Garcia is in his 10th season as head coach of the UCSD cross country program. He took over the reins in 2007 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach. Garcia was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at UCSD from 1996-2000. He earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including All-Academic District VIII and CCAA All-Academic accolades in 2000-01.
This season's rosters feature many student-athletes from the San Diego area. The men's list includes Nick Famolaro (San Diego/West Hills HS), Aren Johnson (San Diego/Army Navy Academy), Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS) and Burak Tufekci (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS). Women hailing from San Diego County include Raélene deArmas (Chula Vista/Bonita Vista Senior HS), Alexandra Hernandez (El Cajon/Granite Hills HS), Christa Kloha (San Diego/Westview HS), Kristin Semancsin (San Diego/Valhalla HS) and Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS).

Should the Tritons or any individuals qualify, they will have two weeks off before traveling to St. Leo, Fla. for their final race of the season at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19.
