HOW TO EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS
It's easier said than done. The top-40 finishers will be receive All-America honors.

AT THE CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Triton men took third at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships on Oct. 22. UCSD collected 69 points, being narrowly edged out by Cal Poly Pomona who amassed 67 points. No. 4 Chico State won the CCAA title for the 15th straight year with 20 points. Seniors Tareq Alwafai and Brendan Gee, and sophomore Aren Johnson received All-CCAA honors by placing in the top 15.

The Triton women finished fourth with 124 points, behind Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus State. Karina Carstens earned her second straight All-CCAA award after placing 15th individually.

AT NCAA WEST REGIONALS
The UCSD men's team fell one place shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, finishing sixth in an incredibly tough region. The Triton women finished ninth. Seniors Tareq Alwafai and Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS) individually punched their tickets to the national meet by virtue of being two of the first three finishers not already on a team going to the NCAA Championships. Alwafai was seventh out of 168 runners, finishing the 10-kilometer course in 30:09.47. Gee placed 10th with a time of 30:30.87. By virtue of finishing in the top 25, Gee and Alwafai both received All-West Region honors.

HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA
Former Triton student-athlete Nate Garcia is in his 10th season as head coach of the UCSD cross country program. He took over the reins in 2007 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach. Garcia was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at UCSD from 1996-2000. He earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including All-Academic District VIII and CCAA All-Academic accolades in 2000-01.
