Second-Team Academic All-America Distinction for Senior Captain Kiera Bocchino
Release: Monday 11/21/2016
by UCSD

AUSTIN, Texas - University of California San Diego women's soccer co-captain Kiera Bocchino was named Monday to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team for the NCAA Division II.

Bocchino is a first-time Academic All-American, and the first Triton since a third straight honor for Cassie Callahan in 2014. She is one of 11 student-athletes and three midfielders on the second team, with 33 honorees in all. A first career Academic All-District 8 First Team selection last month, advanced her to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot.

A human development major with an education studies minor, Bocchino maintains a 3.60 grade-point average. After graduating next month, she hopes to continue on at UC San Diego for a master's in education, and ultimately become a teacher.

Ninth-ranked UC San Diego had its amazing 2016 season ended just this past Friday in Golden, Colo., with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 1 Western Washington, which thus won its second straight West Region crown and then ultimately advanced to the national semifinals. The Tritons finished 19-3 and as record ninth-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champions with a perfect 12-0 league mark, as well as record 10th-time CCAA Tournament victors.

Bocchino, a fifth-year Triton and second-year captain out of Laguna Hills, started each of the first 21 matches before having to miss the final Western Washington tilt due to an injury suffered late in the previous NCAA tournament match. She provided career bests of eight goals and five assists for 21 total points, fourth on the team. Three of those goals were game-winners.

For her efforts in 2016, Bocchino made the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association All-West Region First Team and All-CCAA First Team. The 2015 CCAA Tournament Most Valuable Offensive Player capped her illustrious UCSD career with 73 starts among 78 games played, and 54 points from 20 goals and 14 assists.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her institution and be nominated by his/her sports information department.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
