Regional Staff of the Year Recognition for UC San Diego Women's Soccer
Release: Tuesday 11/29/2016

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of California San Diego women's soccer coaching staff, led by legendary head coach Brian McManus, was on Nov. 21 announced as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West Region Staff of the Year for the NCAA Division II.

McManus' staff consists of associate head coach Kristin Jones, herself a Triton legend as a two-time national champion and two-time All-American in her playing days, and assistant coach Trent Painter, who primarily directs the goalkeepers. Jones and Painter completed their 13th and sixth seasons, respectively, on the bench next to McManus, who was in his milestone 30th campaign in 2016.

The NSCAA this year went away from separate postseason head coach and assistant coach awards, and instead is honoring entire staffs.

UC San Diego had its incredible 2016 run ended on Friday, Nov. 18, with a 2-1 overtime defeat to top-ranked Western Washington in the West Region final, or third round, of the NCAA Championship in Golden, Colo. The ninth-ranked Tritons thus finished 19-3, that loss to the unbeaten Vikings snapping a 16-game win streak as UCSD became the first team since 1998 to put together a perfect California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) slate, at 12-0. The Tritons then added a record 10th CCAA Tournament banner for a league double. An unprecedented 11 players, the entire starting lineup, earned some type of CCAA recognition.

McManus was a six-time NSCAA Division II West Region Coach of the Year during the previous incarnation of the award, in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2010 and 2011. He was also named the CCAA Coach of the Year for a sixth time earlier this month. McManus has achieved the most wins in the history of Division II women's soccer.

Each of the 24 staffs receiving NSCAA Regional Staff of the Year recognition will be honored at the College Coaches Awards Reception, presented by Surf Cup Sports, on Jan. 12, 2017, at the JW Marriott Los Angeles, in conjunction with the 2017 NSCAA Convention.

In addition, the eight NSCAA Regional Staff of the Year recipients in each NCAA division will be placed on the ballot for NSCAA National Staff of the Year consideration within their respective NCAA division. The ballot will also include the coaching staffs from any schools which have advanced to the semifinals of their NCAA Championship. Those awards will be unveiled on Dec. 20.
