Release: Friday 12/09/2016

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of California San Diego women's soccer senior midfield tandem of Jamie Benedetto and Kiera Bocchino were named early Friday to the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-West Region Team for the NCAA Division II.

Bocchino, a five-year Triton and two-year team captain out of Laguna Hills (Laguna Hills HS), has maintained a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average. Benedetto, a four-year Triton from Santa Barbara (Dos Pueblos HS), boasts a 3.31 GPA. Both are human development majors with minors in education studies, who are completing their undergraduate degrees this week.

The two Tritons are among 11 players and five midfielders chosen to the team. Benedetto is a first-time NSCAA honoree for academics, while this is Bocchino's third time being recognized by the coaches' association. She gained Scholar All-West Region honorable mention two years ago, and Scholar All-West Region Third Team selection for last season.

Benedetto and Bocchino led UC San Diego to a 19-3 overall mark and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) double, as perfect regular-season champion and record 10th-time CCAA Tournament victor. The Tritons had their season ended on Nov. 18 by top-ranked eventual undefeated national champion Western Washington, 2-1 in overtime, in the West Region final in Golden, Colo. UCSD wound up with a No. 10 national ranking in the final NSCAA poll, released on Tuesday.

Bocchino was earlier distinguished as a second-team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American. Athletically, she picked up Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-America honorable mention, as well as D2CCA All-West Region First Team and All-CCAA First Team selections. Benedetto made the NSCAA All-West Region Second Team, All-CCAA Second Team and CCAA All-Tournament Team.

Student-athletes receiving scholar honors from the NSCAA meet the criteria of a 3.30 cumulative GPA, starting in more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contributing to their team, being nominated by the head coach of a current NSCAA College Services member institution, and being a junior or above in academic standing. Transfer students must be in their second year at the school.
