SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego fencing team competed in the season's second and final San Diego Open Sunday at Cathedral Catholic High School. The Tritons earned three podium finishes, including a win in Senior Mixed Saber.
The event featured three Senior Mixed divisions as well as Senior Women's Foil.
Freshman Alexandre Leonelli (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) took the victory in Senior Mixed Saber. He was joined on the podium by sophomore teammate Thejas Gulati, who placed second. Gulati won the event at the first San Diego Open back in October.
In Senior Mixed Foil, senior Mitchell Shulman recorded a second-place finish. He tied for third in the same weapon last October.
Junior Alex Okamoto placed a team-best seventh in Senior Mixed Epee.
UC San Diego's top finishers on the women's side in the Senior Mixed categories included sophomore Lillian Chu, who was 11th in Saber, and classmate Katie Hallsten, who placed 13th in Epee.
Junior Sophia Holmqvist finished sixth in Senior Women's Foil. She led four Tritons into the top-10 as junior Erica Ho was seventh, sophomore Monique Zhou placed eighth, and freshman Caitlyn Callaghan was 10th.
UC San Diego is next in action Feb. 4-5 at the Northwestern Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
