BOSTON, Mass. - The University of California San Diego women’s water polo team finished 2-0 on the second day of the Harvard Invitational after beating No. 19 Harvard 12-6 and capping the day with a 13-7 win over Iona, Saturday at Blodgett Pool in Boston.
With the wins, UC San Diego improves to 7-9 on the season. After its loss to UCSD, Harvard beat No. 21 Marist to move to 5-4 overall. Iona dropped both of its game today and remains winless at 0-6.
Sophomore center Chanel Schilling led the Triton offense with seven goals on the day. Senior Alexis Wieseler and junior Kayla Fedler added four apiece while Lani Tittle and Lauren Boyer each tallied two.
In goal, freshman Reilly Gallagher ended the day with 15 saves and two assists. The Tritons notched 29 steals on defense with a team-high eight coming from Fedler.
Despite trailing 6-3 at the half, UCSD shutout the Crimson in the second half of play while tallying nine goals to grab the come from behind victory.
Harvard scored first, but the Tritons answered with three-consecutive goals to go up, 3-1. Schilling, Fedler and Tittle each added a goal in the stretch. The Crimson closed out the first frame with three-straight goals to take a 4-3 lead after the first quarter.
The Harvard defense held UCSD scoreless in the second frame, while adding two goals to take a three-goal lead into halftime.
Schilling and Fedler scored back-to-back goals to open the second half. Wieseler followed with two-consecutive goals to give UCSD a 7-6 lead. Boyer capped the frame, scoring with seven seconds left on the clock.
UCSD opened up its lead in the final frame with goals from Fedler, Schilling and Boyer to earn win. The Crimsons’ Mathilde Ribordy tallied two goals.
"We stuggled in the first half against Harvard," said head coach Brad Kreutxkamp. "However, in the second half we buckled down on defense and started to lighting up the cage".
The Tritons and Gaels exchanged back-to-back goals in the first frame, with the game remaining tied at four after the quarter.
UCSD shutout Iona in the second while tacking on three goals to lead 7-4 at the half. Shelby Stender, Wieseler and Boyer each notched a goal in the frame.
The Gaels’ Devika Joshi opened up the second half with a goal to make is a 7-5 game. However, Tittle answered, scoring with 3:44 left in the quarter.
The Tritons broke open the lead in the final frame, scoring five goals, to cruise to the 13-7 win. Five different Tritons’ found the back of the net during the quarter.
Rebecca Koshy and Hannah Schultz led the offense for the Gaels’ with two goals each. Ino goal, Britten Vilander made a game-high 14 saves.
"I think we carried over our momentum from our game against Harvard and showed great energy against Iona," said Kreutzkamp. "Iona was a tough team but we outlasted them up and down the pool on the counter attack".
