Release: Sunday 03/05/2017

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women’s basketball team earned the No. 4 seed for the 2017 NCAA West Regional, hosted by top-seeded Alaska Anchorage, and will face fifth-seeded Simon Fraser in a quarterfinal matchup Friday in Anchorage.

The 64-team field was revealed Sunday by the NCAA.

UCSD will face SFU on Friday, March 10 in the quarterfinal round. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT at Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

Also making the trip to Anchorage are No. 2 seed California Baptist, No. 3 Western Washington, No. 6 Cal State East Bay, No. 7 Point Loma and No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific.

The winner of the UCSD/SFU game will face either Alaska Anchorage or Hawai'i Pacific in a semifinal on Saturday.

The championship game will be on Monday, March 13.

The winner of the regional will earn a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in Columbus, Ohio.

The Tritons are making their 10th appearance in the NCAA Division II postseason, also qualifying in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2016. UCSD’s deepest run came in 2007, when it advanced all the way to the Final Four.

The Tritons hold a 10-9 record in NCAA Division II postseason play. Last season, UCSD made it to the West Region final after beating Cal State East Bay and Azusa Pacific. The Tritons fell to Alaska Anchorage 72-57 in the third round.

UCSD (23-6) earned a spot in the West Regional by going 21-5 in the regular season and 17-3 in CCAA play, winning the conference regular-season title outright. The Tritons took down Sonoma State and Stanislaus State in the CCAA Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, before falling in the final to Cal State East Bay, 62-53.

SFU lost in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament to third-seeded Western Washington, 58-57. The Clan finished the regular season 24-7 overall and 15-5 in conference play. SFU has not reached the NCAA tournament since 2014.

The Tritons and Clan have only met once before, during the 2012-13 season. SFU escaped with a 61-58 victory and holds a 1-0 lead over UCSD all-time.
