SAN RAMON, Calif. - University of California San Diego sophomore first baseman Tyler Durna has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 27-March 5.
Durna, a Chino Hills product out of Ruben S. Ayala High School, is UCSD's second weekly honoree of 2017, after senior outfielder Jack Larsen on Feb. 14, and is a first-time award winner for his college career.
Durna helped lead now-eighth-ranked UC San Diego to a doubleheader and series split at reigning CCAA North Division champion, CCAA tournament runner-up and NCAA Division II West Regional participant Cal State East Bay in Hayward. The teams each won a game during Saturday's twin bill, with Sunday's single finale canceled due to unplayable field conditions after heavy rains on Saturday night.
Durna went 4-for-8 on the day with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. He was 2-for-4 in both contests. In the opener, a 9-4 triumph for the Tritons' ninth win in a row, his bases-loaded, two-run single with no outs ignited a five-run second inning. Durna also scored in that frame, and later added a solo blast, the second of both the season and his career, in the sixth. The home run came with two away, at the conclusion of a 10-pitch at-bat during which Durna fouled off four 3-2 offerings. He notched his first two doubles of 2017 in the nine-inning nightcap, but UCSD managed only three other hits and dropped a 6-1 decision.
After struggling a bit out of the gate (1-for-11), Durna has gone 11-for-22 (.500) with 10 RBI over the Tritons' last seven games, all of them starts at first base. His season batting average is up to .364.
UCSD hosts another CCAA North foe in Cal State Monterey Bay for a three-game set this Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Triton Ballpark on East Campus in La Jolla. General admission is $5, while parking is free both days. All home games can be viewed in high definition on UCSDtritons.tv.
