Tritons Net 17 Threes to Defeat Dixie State and Advance to West Regional Semis
Release: Friday 03/10/2017

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Seventeen three-pointers and a big night on the boards propelled the top-seeded and 19th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team to a 94-68 win against No. 8 seed Dixie State Friday night in an NCAA West Regional quarterfinal at RIMAC Arena.

The victory advanced UCSD (26-5) to Saturday's semifinals, where it will meet fourth-seeded and 13th-ranked California Baptist at 7:30 p.m.

Overall, the Tritons shot 52.4 percent (33-63) and drained 44.7 percent (17-38) of their shots from behind the arc. The 17 treys were the second most this season as they made 18 against Humboldt State on Feb. 18.

UCSD also owned the boards, out-rebounding DSU 37-23, which included a 12-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

Senior guard Aleks Lipovic netted seven three-pointers to match his career high. He finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting, with all but one of his shot attempts coming from long range. Lipovic also had four rebounds and three assists.

Junior guard George Buaku and sophomore guard/forward Christian Oshita both totaled 13 points, while sophomore center Chris Hansen notched his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Adam Klie, the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, had 10 points and a career-best nine assists.

UC San Diego turned the ball over just six times. The Tritons entered the game averaging 10.3 turnovers per game, the 11th-lowest in the country.

The 94 points were the most for UCSD since it dropped 95 against St. Katherine College in November of 2013.

Lipovic hit his first three-pointer of the night with 18:31 left in the opening half to put UCSD up 5-2 and the Tritons would lead the rest of the way. With only 34 seconds left in the game, senior guard Koree Cox made a three to elevate the Tritons' lead to 29 points, 94-65, their largest of the contest.

The Trailblazers had a good shooting night as well, making 25 of 50 attempts for a 50 percent clip. They made three of nine three-pointers (33.3 percent) and just 15 of 25 free throws (60 percent). Trevor Hill led DSU with 16 points, while Marcus Bradley and Kyler Nielson each had 12.

California Baptist earned its spot in the semis by defeating San Francisco State, 71-50, Friday.

Saturday's early semifinal (5:00 p.m.) features Chico State, the sixth seed, against second-seeded and fourth-ranked Hawaii Pacific.
