No. 16 Tritons Drop to No. 13 Indiana, Defeat Chapman on Final Day of Aztec Invite

by UCSD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo team took down Chapman University, 20-3, to conclude the two-day Aztec Invitational Sunday at Aztec Aquaplex. UC San Diego was defeated by No. 13 Indiana, 6-3, in the first game of the day.

UCSD finished the tournament 2-2, after splitting day one of the invite.

The Tritons are now 11-12 overall. The Hoosiers improve to 13-4 on the season and Chapman falls to 2-12 overall.

“I was disappointed with how we played on offense against Indiana,” said head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. “However, we turned it around and had an explosive 20-goal game against Chapman. Our counter attack improved a lot during the second game but we need to work on our power play and penalty shooting”.

GAME ONE
UCSD got on the board first with back-to-back goals from senior Lauren Boyer and sophomore Chanel Schilling.  IU’s Joelle Nacouzi answered to make it a 2-1 game after the first frame.

The Hoosiers shutout the Tritons in the second quarter, to knot the game at two heading into halftime.

UCSD could not find the back of the cage in the third frame as IU notched two goals to head into the final quarter with a 4-2 lead.

Schilling scored on a power play with 2:34 remaining in the game, however, it wasn’t enough as the Hoosiers escaped with the 6-3 victory.

In goal, freshman Reilly Gallagher tallied seven saves while the Hoosiers’ Jessica Gaudreault totaled 10.

GAME TWO
Senior Hanna Schneider earned her first hat trick of the season with four goals while sophomores Shelby Stender and Halley Atkinson tallied three goals as UCSD cruised to a win over Chapman.

Stender notched three goals in the first frame and sophomore Krista Schneider added one as the Tritons’ went up 4-1.

Chapman scored with 2:14 left in the second frame to cut the lead, 4-2, however, UCSD’s Connie Wu answered to give the Tritons a three-goal lead at the half.

UCSD broke open the lead in the third frame, scoring nine goals, to surge ahead, 14-3. Freshman Jessee Ransone scored back-to-back goals to open the quarter while Atkinson and Hanna Schneider added two each. Kayla Fedler, Rachel Emami and Boyer also tallied goals in the frame.

The Tritons shutout the Panthers in the fourth frame, adding six goals in the final quarter to earn the decisive victory. Hanna Schneider nabbed two goals to complete her hat trick.

Gallagher made six saves while the Panthers’ Kerry Goodspeed tallied seven.
