Two Tritons Qualify for NCAA Championships
Release: Wednesday 03/15/2017
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Two University of California San Diego fencers have qualified for the NCAA Championships, which will be contested March 23-26 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.

David Hadler and Taly Yukelson will represent the Tritons on the national stage later this month.

Hadler, a junior foilist, placed second in his weapon at last week's NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif. He finished just behind Olympian Alexander Massialis of Stanford University.

It will be Hadler's third trip to the NCAA Championships. In 2015, he placed 14th overall in men's foil, while he was 20th overall in 2016.

Yukelson, a freshman, took first place in women's epee at the NCAA West Regional, topping competitors from Stanford, Air Force, Caltech and Incarnate Word.

The National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (men's/women's epee, men's/women's foil, men's/women's saber). Fencers will first compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. The top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners facing off to determine first and second places. The non-advancing fencers are awarded a tie for third.

A team's place finish will be based on points earned by each individual, with one point awarded for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.

At the 2016 NCAA Championships, UC San Diego placed 18th of 25 teams with four Tritons competing. Columbia won its second-straight national championship. Ohio State was second, while Princeton came in third.

Notre Dame, in conjunction with the Indiana Sports Corp, will serve as the host institution for this year’s NCAA Championships.

All action can be followed via live scoringA live feed of the semifinal and final bouts will be available on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app. The semifinals and finals, along with other highlights from the NCAA Championships, will air on ESPNU at 11:30 a.m. PT on April 5.
