LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team suffered two losses in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader Thursday at Triton Softball Field. UC San Diego was shutout in both games by scores of 1-0 and 3-0.
With the losses, UCSD drops to 14-10 overall and 9-9 in conference play. The Tritons remain fifth in the league. CSUMB improves to 11-3 in the CCAA and 17-4 on the season. The Otters are now second in the league behind Humboldt State (20-1,13-1).
CSUMB pitcher Hayley Fein threw a complete game and only gave up four hits as UCSD was defeated 1-0.
Neither team could get things going on offense, as the game remained scoreless through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Samantha Luna hit an RBI single to plate Marissa Hukkanen as the Otters took a 1-0 lead. Rachel Phillips singled to right field for the Tritons’ in the bottom of the inning before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Danica Kazakoff. However, it wasn’t enough as the Otters’ defense kept UCSD from bringing home a run.
Fein (10-3) was credited with the win and had three strikeouts. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Brown (4-4) took the loss, pitching 4.4 innings. Senior Milana Casillas came in relief of Brown for the final 2.2 innings.
The Otters defense once again proved to be too much for UCSD, as the Tritons were held to a single hit and suffered a 3-0 defeat. CSUMB got a complete game effort from pitcher Rosalia Keirns (4-0) who picked up the win, struck out two and gave up one hit.
A throwing error on the Triton second baseman gave the Otters’ their first run of the game in the second inning.
UCSD’s only hit came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Danica Kazakoff singled into left field.
CSUMB struck again in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to ultimately seal the victory. Madison Casto and Anneliese Lopez each picked up an RBI.The Tritons were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Lizzy Beutter (4-4) took the loss, pitching her second complete game. She totaled five strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
UCSD closes out the four-game series against CSUMB on Friday, March 17 with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
