No. 19 UC San Diego Opens WWPA Play With Wins Against Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State

ATHERTON, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team opened its Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) campaign with wins against Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State. UC San Diego downed CSUMB 16-2 before beating Sonoma State 13-4. 

With the wins, UCSD improves to 13-12 overall and 2-0 in WWPA play. The Otters fall to 6-9 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. The Seawolves are 6-16 overall and 0-1 in the WWPA. 

The Tritons totaled 20 steals and held the Otters to just one goal in each half to prevail, 16-2.

UCSD took a 5-0 lead after the first quarter with goals from senior Lauren Boyer, senior Alexis Wieseler, junior Kayla Fedler and sophomore Chanel Schilling

Freshman Jessee Ransone opened up the second frame with a goal before Boyer and Schilling added two more to go up 8-0. The Otters' Angela Steele scored to make it an 8-1 at halftime.

SSU opened up the third quarter with a goal from Adrianna Craft but UCSD answered scoring three more in the frame to go up, 11-2.

The Tritons shut out the Otters in the fourth quarter, notching five more goals to cruise to a 14-point victory.

Fedler and Boyer each had hat tricks with three goals apiece. Wieseler, sophomore Shelby Stender and Krista Schneider tallied two goals each and Ransone, Connie Wu and Carly Innis added one each.

In goal, freshman Reilly Gallagher tallied five saves. CSUMB goalie Morgen Fain collected 10 saves.

UCSD’s offense could not be stopped as the Tritons won by nine scores, 13-4.

SSU jumped on the board first just twenty seconds into the game, but UCSD quickly answered, scoring four-consecutive goals to go up 4-1 after the first quarter. 

The Tritons extended their lead in the second frame, shutting out the Seawolves and adding on three goals to take a 7-1 lead at the half. 

In the second half, UCSD outscored SSU 6-2 to seal its 13th win of the season. 

Wieseler had a game-high six goals and tallied her seventh hat trick of the season. Fedler had three goals while sophomore Chanel Schilling notched two. As a team, the Tritons collected 20 steals and 12 ejections drawn. Gallagher made four saves in goal.

Carleigh Robinson led the Seawolves' with two goals. 

UCSD will return to action tomorrow for a WWPA matchup at Cal State East Bay at 2 p.m.
