LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite trailing 3-2 at halftime, the No. 19 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team used a four-goal final quarter to upset No. 12 Long Beach State, 9-8, Friday evening at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With the win, UC San Diego improves to 15-14 on the season. LBSU drops to 15-10.
The UCSD defense tallied nine steals and three field blocks with senior Lani Tittle notching a team-best two field blocks and two steals. Boyer and Fedler each had a five-meter penalty drawn.
In goal, freshman Reilly Gallagher tallied eight saves and grabbed one steal.
Christina Kotsia had three goals for LBSU while Virginia Smith added two.
The Tritons outscored the Beach 7-5 in the second half to come from behind and seal the upset win.
The 49ers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Boyer notched her first goal with 1:41 left in the frame. Kotsia scored on a powerplay to give LBSU a 3-1 lead heading into the second. The UCSD defense shutout the 49ers in the second frame. Boyer drilled in a penalty shot to make it a 3-2 game at halftime.
The 49ers’ Kotsia opened up the second half with a powerplay goal before teammate Jackie Stanger added another with 3:59 on the clock. The Tritons answered with back-to-back goals from Wieseler and Fedler. In the final minute of the third frame, sophomore Krista Schneider found Wieseler for a goal on a six-on-five opportunity to knot the game at five heading into the final quarter.
Smith found the back of the net for LBSU early fourth before Wieseler scored on a powerplay off a pass from Boyer. Less than a minute later, Fedler had an unassisted goal to give UCSD a 7-6 lead.
Wiesler connected with Boyer for a goal with 2:35 left on the clock. The 49ers quickly answered scoring seconds later to make it an 8-7 game.
Ransone had the game-winner with 1:52 on the clock. She drilled one in to the back of the net off a pass from Schneider. Smith added a goal in the final minute for LBSU but it wasn’t enough as the Tritons pulled off the upset.
UCSD returns to the pool Saturday, April 8, for a game against Pomona-Pitzer at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. Prior to the start, the Tritons will honor six members of the senior class playing in their final regular-season home contest.
