Tritons Get Swept in Doubleheader Against No. 13 Chico State, Split Series
Release: Saturday 04/15/2017
by UCSD
CHICO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team could not get things going offensively and suffered a doubleheader defeat at the hands of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent No. 13 Chico State, Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field. UC San Diego was swept in both of its games by scores of 3-0 and 2-0. UCSD finished the series 2-2 after winning both games in a doubleheader Friday.

With the losses, the Tritons move to 23-31 overall and 14-18 in the CCAA. The Wildcats improve to 31-10 on the season and 21-9 in the conference. UCSD remains seventh in the CCAA standings. CSUC is third in the league.

GAME ONE
The Wildcats’ Haley Gilham threw a complete game and only gave up four hits as the Tritons were defeated 3-0.

Neither team could get things going on offense, as the game remained scoreless through three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, CSUC scored two unearned runs to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Olivia Dallera and Sarah Galaviz made it across home plate on an error by the UCSD second baseman. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kristin Worley reached on an error by the Triton first baseman before Dallara had a single that scored Worley.

UCSD was retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings.

Gilham (18-4) was credited with the win. Sophomore Lauren Brown (9-9) earned the loss after pitching a complete game and allowing seven hits.

Kendall Baker, Kelsi Maday, Caitlyn Weisner and Danica Kazakoff each had a hit for the Tritons, while Dallara led CSUC with two hits and an RBI.

GAME TWO
The Wildcats pitching staff once again proved to be too much for UCSD, as the Tritons were held to three hits and suffered a 2-0 defeat. The Wildcats’ Samantha Murlock pitched six innings and got the win while Gilham threw the final inning and earned a save.

The two teams combined for only three hits through six innings of play.

UCSD committed an error in the field that led two both runs for CSUC in the bottom of the sixth. Cailin Garmon reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and stole second before reaching third on a fielder’s choice. Ari March hit a single to centerfield that brought home Garmon and Worley.

The Tritons loaded the bases in the seventh inning but could not bring a runner home and ultimately suffered the loss. Brittney Ross-Smith had a single to right field in the inning.

Junior Lauren Sanders, Ross-Smith and Rachel Phillips had UCSD’s only hits while Baker swiped one base. For the Wildcats, Marsh had one hit and two RBI.

In the circle, freshman Lizzy Beutter (7-7) was credited with the loss after pitching 5.0 innings. She had three strikeouts and gave up three hits. Senior Milana Casillas came in relief of Brown and did not allow a hit in one inning of work.

UCSD will close out the home portion of its regular-season schedule April 21-22 with a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The doubleheader on Friday is set to start at 1:00 p.m. while Saturday’s games will begin at 12 p.m.
