UC San Diego Splits Doubleheader With Cal State Dominguez Hills

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego split two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games against Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at Triton Softball Field. UC San Diego cruised to an 8-2 win in the first game before suffering a 7-6 loss in game two. 

UCSD is now 24-22 on the season and 15-9 in the CCAA. CSUDH moves to 7-40 overall and 5-29 in the conference. 

GAME ONE
The Tritons scored six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead while adding an insurance run in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 victory.

The Toros’ Damari Simon got things started with a two-out homer over left filed in the top of the first inning. UCSD answered in the bottom with an RBI bunt single from junior Kelsi Maday that scored junior Kendall Baker.

The Tritons surged ahead in the fourth inning, scoring six runs to take a lead it would not relinquish. Sophomore Caitlyn Weisner got things started with a big triple to center field to score freshman Danielle Stedman. Freshman Danica Kazakoff followed with an RBI single before Baker had a single that scored Kazakoff. Sophomore Maddy Lewis doubled to left center to score Baker before making it across home plate herself on a wild pitch.

CSUDH scored on an error by the Triton pitcher in the top of the sixth inning before UCSD added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.Sophomore Kristyana Boghossian singled up the middle to bring in the Tritons’ final run.

Sophomore righty Lauren Brown (10-9) earned her 10th win of the season after throwing five innings and giving up one run. She only allowed five hits. Senior Milana Casillas came in relief of Brown for two innings, only allowing one hit. The Toros’ Sharie Albert (3-20) suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs.

Baker finished 2-for-2 with an RBI while Lewis, Boghossian, Maday, Weisner and Woken each had an RBI. In total, UCSD stole six bases with Baker and Woken leading the way, swiping two apiece.

GAME TWO
Despite trailing 7-0 through the top of the fifth inning, the Tritons scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately fell short, suffering a 7-6 defeat.

CSUDH jumped on the board first, scoring two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. The Toros extended their lead in the fifth inning when Simon scored on a fielding error by the Triton third baseman followed by an RBI single from Kayla Lock.

Three runs in the fifth inning ultimately sealed the win for CSUDH. Analisa Nicholson had two RBI double to left center before Lock singled through the left side to score Nicholson as the Toros gained a 7-0 advantage.

UCSD answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs to make it a 7-4 ball game. Baker got things started scoring on a fielder’s choice before Weisner doubled to left center to bring Stedman and Maday home. Weisner made it across home plate on an RBI groundout from freshman Mikaila Reyes.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Tritons scored two runs, coming within one of CSUDH, but it wasn’t enough as they earned the loss. Weisner and Kazakoff both scored on a fielding error by the Toro second baseman.

Freshman Lizzy Beutter (7-8) was credited with the loss after giving up four earned runs and six hits. Casillas came in relief of Brown and allowed three runs in 1.1 innings of work. Brown pitched the last inning. Jade Loe (3-12) earned the win for CSUDH.

Weisner had two RBI to go along with two hits while Reyes tallied two hits. UCSD totaled four stolen bases.

The Tritons will conclude the four-game series Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader set to start at 12 p.m.
