CHICO, Calif. - Senior Taylor Eljenholm and freshman Chelsea Challacombe represented the University of California San Diego track and field teams in the first four events of the heptathlon on the first day of the 2017 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships, Thursday at University Stadium. UC San Diego did not have any competitors in the decathlon.
Through four events of her collegiate heptathlon debut, Challacombe sits in fifth place with 2647 total points, while Eljenholm is right behind her in sixth with a total of 2529. Humboldt State's Marissa McCay is currently leading with 3255 points.
Challacombe's best finish came in the high jump, as she hit a mark of 5'2.25" to tie for fourth and earn 712 points. She placed fifth in the shot put (33'1.75"/536), fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.90/727) and 15th in the 200-meter dash (27.49/672).
In the high jump, Eljenholm tied for second with a mark of 5'3.25" to get her 747 points. She placed sixth in the shot put (31'4.5"/501), ninth in the 100 hurdles (16.65/637) and 16th in the 200-meter dash (27.83/644).
The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the long jump (10 a.m), javelin (11:15 a.m.) and 800-meter run (12:15 p.m.).
Competition for the rest of the UCSD squad will begin tomorrow in the field, with women's hammer at 12 p.m. The track events will kick off with the prelims of the women's 4x100 relay at 3:30 p.m.
