Tritons Begin Action at IRA National Championships Friday
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's rowing team earned an invitation to the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships and three Triton crews begin action Friday.
UC San Diego will field Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 boats on Lake Natoma, outside of Sacramento, Calif.
"I'm really proud of the team and the work they have put in," said UCSD head coach Zach Johnson. "This is a culmination of a culture shift that brought this team back to nationals for the fourth time in less than 10 years. These student-athletes aren't just content with qualifying, they are looking to make a name for our university."
UC San Diego also qualified for the IRA National Championships in 2009, 2011, and 2013.
A total of 35 institutions will be represented at the 2017 championships. The men's heavyweight division has a full field of 24 crews in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight, while the Third Varsity Eight has a record 20 entries. Seventeen men's heavyweight programs earned automatic qualification into the regatta, with seven at-large berths being awarded.
The Tritons' Varsity 8 gets things started on Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Heat 1 against Navy, Northeastern, Washington, Brown, and Columbia. The Second Varsity 8 follows at 9:30 a.m. in Heat 1 against Navy, George Washington, Washington, Brown, and Oregon State. UCSD's Third Varsity 8 boat hits the water at 10:30 a.m. in Heat 3 against Cornell, California, Brown, and Oregon State.
Repechages will be held Friday afternoon with semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
California is the reigning Varsity 8 national champion, breaking Washington's five-year run in 2016. Cornell has won the V8 title 25 times and is followed by Washington (18), California (17), Navy (12), Pennsylvania (9), Wisconsin (8), Brown (7), Syracuse (6), Columbia (4), Harvard (3), Princeton (3), Northeastern (2), and Dartmouth (1).
Harvard won the Second Varsity 8 national championship in 2016, while Washington took the Freshman 8 (now Third Varsity 8) title last season.
In their most recent outing, the Tritons recorded strong results at the Western Sprints on Lake Natoma to solidify their invite to the IRA regatta. The Third Varsity 8 won against Santa Clara and Gonzaga, while the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 crews placed second.
