WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The University of California San Diego women's rowing team concluded its 2016-17 season Sunday with an appearance in the Varsity 8 Petite Final at the NCAA Division II Championships in New Jersey.

The V8 Petite Final was a two-boat race as UC San Diego faced off against Barry. The Buccaneers finished first with a time of 7:06.734, while the Tritons placed second, just two seconds behind at 7:08.067.

With sunny skies and fairly calm waters, the race began with Barry leading at the launch, summoning a 38 stroke per minute rate and a five-seat lead over UCSD.

By the 750-meter mark, Barry had increased its lead to half a boat length. From that point on, both crews dueled the rest of the way, matching each other stroke-for-stroke. At 1750 meters, the Tritons gained on the Bucs, closing the difference by one or two seats. Ultimately, Barry crossed the finish line three seats ahead of UCSD.

"We had a great final race, with a side-by-side dogfight with Barry the whole way down," said head coach Colin Truex. "After a long weekend they didn't give an inch and I am proud of them."

In the Varsity 8 Grand Final, Central Oklahoma secured the NCAA Division II Championship with a winning time of 6:58.513. Western Washington took second at 7:00.569, Florida Tech was third at 7:04.888, and Mercyhurst fourth at 7:16.324.

In the Varsity 4 Grand Final, Western Washington (7:51.610) won and was followed by Mercyhurst (8:06.148) and Central Oklahoma (8:12.477).

UC San Diego was making its sixth appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships and first since 2013. In 2006, 2007, and 2008, the Tritons were eligible for the national title after qualifying Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats, as they were in 2017. They finished as runner-up to Western Washington in 2007 and 2008. In 2005 and 2013, UCSD qualified a Varsity 8 crew.
