Tritons Finish First of Three Days At IRA National Championships
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's rowing team completed day one action at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships Friday on Lake Natoma, just outside of Sacramento.
UC San Diego had three boats on the water - Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8.
With near-perfect conditions, the morning began with Heat 1 of the Varsity 8. UC San Diego, Washington, Brown, Northeastern, Navy, and Columbia were looking for a top-two finish to gain an automatic spot in Saturday's semifinals, bypassing Friday's repechage races.
Washington, the top-ranked V8 crew in the country, was first with a time of 5:36.892, followed by ninth-ranked Brown in 5:38.083. No. 8 Northeastern (5:43.716) came in third, No. 17 Navy (5:50.102) was fourth, No. 16 Columbia (5:59.255) took fifth, and UCSD (6:07.116) finished sixth.
Washington burst out to an early lead over Brown and Northeastern. After the first few hundred meters, Brown pulled into second with Northeastern staying close. With 250 meters remaining, Navy, Columbia, and UC San Diego settled into fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
The Huskies and Bears earned berths in the semis, while the four other crews moved on to race in repechages Friday afternoon.
In the V8 Repechage 4, 14th-ranked Pennsylvania won in 5:53.184. No. 13 Stanford (5:58.104) was second, No. 18 Oregon State (6:02.277) was third, and UCSD (6:18.103), which fell behind early, placed fourth.
"The morning heats went exactly how we had hoped, conserving energy for the later races," said UC San Diego head coach Zach Johnson. "However, the repechage did not go as expected."
The Tritons' Varsity 8 will race in Semifinal 4 on Saturday at 8:24 a.m. against Navy, Stanford, No. 15 George Washington, Santa Clara, and Hobart.
In Heat One of the Second Varsity 8, Washington (5:45.438) and Brown (5:50.626) again punched tickets straight to the semis. George Washington (5:56.676), Navy (6:02.205), Oregon State (6:08.270), and UC San Diego (6:18.563) came in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
UW came out strong and took the lead early. Brown and George Washington competed for second in the first few hundred meters before Brown eventually secured a lead. Washington would ensure its victory at the 500-meter mark with an open water lead over Brown.
In the 2V8 Repechage 4, Dartmouth earned the victory in 6:03.291. Stanford (6:06.430) was second and Syracuse (6:16.234) came in third. The Tritons dropped back after 250 meters and logged a final time of 6:35.805 to place fourth.
UCSD's Second Varsity 8 will now row in Semifinal 4 on Saturday at 9:12 a.m. against Stanford, Navy, Oregon State, Hobart, and Florida Tech.
In the Third Varsity 8 Heat Three race, California took first with a time of 5:48.882 and Cornell followed in 5:55.332. Brown (6:01.466) was third, Oregon State (6:10.696) took fourth, and UC San Diego (6:28.045) was fifth.
At launch, Cal adopted a brisk rowing rate to take a four-seat lead ahead of Cornell. The Tritons were briefly in third, but were overtaken by Brown around the 600-meter mark. Oregon State also made gains and passed UCSD at the 650-meter mark.
The 3V8 Repechage 1 saw Northeastern (6:01.134), Syracuse (6:01.526), Brown (6:01.703), and George Washington (6:07.486) all keep a close pack from the 650-meter mark to the finish line, with Northeastern stealing the top spot. Throughout the race, the first four challenged each others' positions, with no one getting a true upper hand until the final meters.
Well behind, Stanford (6:17.789) came in fifth and the Tritons (6:32.152) were sixth.
UCSD's Third Varsity 8 races in Semifinal 4 on Saturday at 9:44 a.m. against George Washington, Oregon State, and Drexel.
"We are competing at the highest level, with our athletes going up against others with international and Olympic experience," said Johnson. "This experience is vital in order to take our program to the next level."
UC San Diego is making its fourth appearance at the IRA National Championships.
