LA JOLLA, Calif. – University of California San Diego women's water polo player senior Lauren Boyer was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year, announced by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Wednesday.
Additionally, senior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler and sophomore center Chanel Schilling garnered All-America honors. Wieseler and Boyer were placed on the first team while Schilling earned second team recognition.
UC San Diego has received the Player of the Year award 14 out of the last 17 years.
Boyer grabbed her first Player of the Year nod and second All-America award after earning second team honors in 2016. The Honolulu, Hawai'i native scored a team-high 81 goals to go along with 34 steals, 12 assists and 58 ejections drawn. Boyer was the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Year and a WWPA All-Tournament honoree. She leaves La Jolla with the second most career penalties drawn with 39 and is fourth all-time with 212 ejections drawn.
Wieseler is a three-time All-American, receiving first team recognition in 2017 and 2016 and second team honors in 2013. She led UC San Diego in steals (62) and five-meter penalties made (7). The Highland native tallied 66 goals, 29 assists and 15 field blocks this season. Over her career, she totaled 297 goals and 248 steals good for second all-time for UCSD in both categories. Wieseler was the 2017 WWPA Tournament MVP and also garnered All-WWPA First Team honors.
Schilling tallied 36 goals, 17 assists and 18 steals. She led the Tritons' with 15 five-meter penalties drawn and 71 ejections drawn. It is her first such honor. The Newport Beach product was also an All-WWPA second team selection.
