Severe Weather Halts No. 4 UC San Diego's NCAA Rubber Game With No. 16 STAC; Further Postponed to Saturday Night
Release: Friday 06/02/2017
by UCSD

UPDATE - As of 6:20 a.m. PT on Saturday morning, UCSD's game against St. Thomas Aquinas has been further delayed due to additional bad weather in the area, to 5 p.m. PT on Saturday night, June 3. That will push both potential title tilts to Sunday, June 4. Those times are yet to be determined.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Fourth-ranked University of California San Diego had its semifinal game with No. 16 St. Thomas Aquinas College at the 2017 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship postponed by severe weather Friday at AirHogs Stadium.

The contest actually was started, with an 11-minute delay, at 1:11 p.m. PT. UC San Diego, the designated visitor, got a five-pitch walk and two-strike single to center by senior outfielders Jack Larsen and Brandon Shirley, respectively. Tyler Durna then fouled off three two-strike pitches before being called out to conclude a nine-pitch at-bat, with Larsen and Shirley both advancing during that time on a passed ball. Seconds after Durna reached the dugout, play was halted for a lightning delay.

Within about 30 minutes of that first strike, a rather large storm moved in very quickly, bringing heavy rain, major thunder and lightning, and even hail.

Upon discussion, it was decided between NCAA staff and both coaches, to resume the game on Saturday morning, June 3, at 8 a.m. PT. It will continue where it left off, with Tritons at second and third and one out in the top of the first. With the weather still poor early Saturday, the resumption time was pushed further to 5 p.m. PT.

The winner will have to defeat No. 6 West Chester University of West Chester, Pa., twice on Sunday, June 4. The Golden Rams are the only team left in the tournament at an undefeated 3-0. Start times for both potential title tilts were to be determined.

UCSD (43-18) is 3-1 in Texas and St. Thomas Aquinas (44-16), of Sparkill, N.Y., is 2-1. This is their third meeting this week, as the Tritons fell to the Spartans, 6-5 in 12 innings, in both teams' opener last Sunday, May 28. UCSD won Thursday's rematch, an elimination game for the Tritons but not for STAC, 10-0 behind a five-hit shutout by redshirt junior right-hander Kyle Goodbrand.

Friday featured the same mound matchup as Sunday, with ace on ace in redshirt senior right-hander Troy Cruz (8-2, 4.08 ERA) for UCSD and All-American junior right-hander Frankie Moscatiello (9-1, 1.77) for STAC. Neither figured in Sunday's extra-inning decision.
