Release: Sunday 06/04/2017
by UCSD

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men's rowing team wrapped up its 2016-17 season Sunday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Lake Natoma.

UC San Diego's Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 crews all rowed in Fourth-Level Finals.

The Varsity 8 Fourth Final concluded with Oregon State taking first place with a time of 5:48.737. Hobart was just behind in second at 5:50.073. St. Joseph's came in third at 5:51.717, Santa Clara was fourth in 5:51.927 and UCSD was fifth, logging a time of 6:01.445.

At launch, Santa Clara took an early lead. Despite the quick start, Hobart positioned itself in first after 500 meters, just ahead of Santa Clara, which dropped into second.

After 1000 meters, Hobart maintained the lead, but Oregon State had taken over second with St. Joseph's moving into third. In the final few hundred meters, the Beavers overtook Hobart for the victory.

In the Second Varsity 8 Fourth Final, Drexel (5:56.934) took first with a margin of just .033 seconds over Florida Tech (5:56.967). In third came Oregon State (6:02.327), then St. Joseph's (6:06.296), UC San Diego (6:06.717) and Santa Clara (6:07.952). The Tritons were a mere .421 out of fourth place.

From the start, all crews kept close to their competition, never gaining or trailing by more than a seat. It wasn't until the 1000-meter mark that Drexel made a move and edged ahead of Florida Tech. Oregon State maintained a lead over St. Joseph's, which was just seats ahead of UCSD and Santa Clara.

With 500 meters remaining, Florida Tech began a push for first but could not get to the line before Drexel. In the final dozen meters, UCSD challenged St. Joseph's for fourth, but it was too little, too late as the Hawks crossed just before them.

The Third Varsity 8 Fourth Final saw a head-to-head showdown between UC San Diego and Santa Clara. The Broncos took first with 6:16.037 while the Tritons finishing behind at 6:25.116.

Both crews kept a tight formation off the start, never taking an advantage over the other until the 500-meter mark. Santa Clara started to edge ahead of UCSD after about 600 meters and at 1000 meters, rode a half-boat lead to the finish line.

Yale was the victor in the Varsity 8 Grand Final. Washington took first in the Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 Grand Finals.

Overall, the Tritons finished 24th in the V8, 23rd in the 2V8 and 20th in the 3V8.

UC San Diego was making its fourth appearance at the IRA National Championships.
