SAN RAMON, Calif. - Adam Klie of the University of California San Diego men's basketball team has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The conference announced its selections Tuesday.
The award is voted on and selected by the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) from the
conference's 13-member institutions.
Klie recently wrapped up a stellar career at UC San Diego. Over the 2016-17 season, the senior guard collected a slew of athletic honors, including CCAA Player of the Year, All-West Region, CCAA Tournament MVP, and NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team accolades.
On the court, Klie averaged 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, all team-bests. He became just the second Triton to record 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds during UC San Diego's Division II era, finishing with 1,524 points and 625 boards.
Klie led UCSD to its finest season in program history as the team set high marks for wins (27) and CCAA victories (17). The Tritons won their first ever conference regular season title and second CCAA Tournament crown. They advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game (Sweet 16) for the second consecutive year.
Off the court, Klie, who hails from Anchorage, Alaska, will graduate with a degree in Bioengineering. Holding a 4.0 GPA, Klie was honored as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America of the Year, just the second Triton to boast the distinction.
He picked up several other academic awards this year, including CCAA Winter All-Academic, UC San Diego Athletics All-Academic, UCSD Athletics Honor Roll, and UCSD Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Klie also made time to assist in various community service projects, which included participating in the La Jolla Shores Beach Clean-up, the San Diego River Clean-up, and serving as a coach for the San Diego Special Olympics Clinic.
Just last week, Klie was tabbed UC San Diego's Outstanding Male Senior Student-Athlete as well as one of 14 of the institution's Athletes of the Year.
Klie is the 12th UC San Diego student-athlete to be selected as a CCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The last Triton to be recognized was men's soccer player Andisheh Bagheri for his accomplishments during the 2013-14 academic year.
Marissa McCay, a standout track and field performer at Humboldt State, was named the 2016-17 CCAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
