SAN RAMON, Calif. - The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) released its annual women's volleyball preseason coaches' poll Thursday and the University of California San Diego is tabbed to finish second in the league's South Division in 2017.

UC San Diego totaled 51 points in the poll of the conference's 13 head coaches. The Tritons were also predicted to finish among the top eight teams overall and earn a berth in the CCAA Tournament.

Cal State San Bernardino, which enters the season ranked 15th nationally, was the favorite to win the 2017 CCAA title. In the South Division, the Coyotes amassed 67 points and 12 first-place votes. Sonoma State was picked as the favorite in the North Division, tallying 73 points and seven first-place votes.

Cal State East Bay, Cal State LA, Cal State San Marcos, Chico State, and Stanislaus State round out the teams predicted to advance to the CCAA Tournament, which will be held Nov. 16-18 on the campus of San Francisco State. At the conclusion of the three-day, single-elimination event, the winner will be crowned the conference tourney champion and receive an automatic berth in the NCAA West Regional.

In 2016, UCSD finished with a 13-13 overall record and a 10-7 mark in CCAA play, good for a second-place finish in the South Division. The Tritons qualified for the league tournament, where they fell in the opening round to Cal State Stanislaus.

Eighth-year head coach Ricci Luyties returns five starters and a primary libero from last year's squad, including Jessyka Beksa (So, OH), Lindsey Chun (So., L), Amanda Colla (Sr., OH), Kayla Evans (Jr., DS), Jessica Rieble (So., MB), and Rebecca Seaberry (Sr., MB). Lost to graduation was All-CCAA First Team outside/middle Meagan Wright.

In 2016, UCSD led the CCAA and ranked 13th nationally in blocks/set (2.31) and was second in the league and 32nd in the country in digs/set (18.10). The Tritons averaged 12.95 kills/set, the fifth-best in the CCAA, and 39.56 attacks/set, 13th in the nation.

UC San Diego starts its 2017 season Sept. 1-2 at Point Loma's Seaside Invitational. The Tritons will take on No. 4 Alaska Anchorage, Azusa Pacific, Simon Fraser, and Point Loma. The team's first home match is Sept. 16 against Cal State San Marcos, which will also serve as UCSD's conference opener.
