CLEVELAND - Former University of California San Diego men's basketball standout Adam Klie has been named the 2016-17 Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The announcement was made Wednesday by the organization.

Earlier in August, 17 regional scholar-athlete award winners were selected by the D2 CCA. Klie and Marie Coors, a golfer from St. Leo, were chosen from a field of eight men's regional winners and nine women's regional winners as the Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

"Adam and Marie truly embody the definition of student-athlete and we are excited to honor both of them with this prestigious award,” stated D2 CCA President Patrick Britz, commissioner of the South Atlantic Conference. “As always, we had amazing nominees to choose from, but the accomplishments of these two on the basketball court, golf course, and in the classroom separated them from the group. We are fortunate to have these remarkable individuals represent NCAA Division II."

Klie recently wrapped up a stellar career at UC San Diego.

Over the 2016-17 season, the senior guard collected a slew of athletic honors, including California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year, All-West Region, CCAA Tournament MVP, and NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team accolades. He averaged 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists - all team bests - while leading UC San Diego to its finest season in program history as the Tritons set high marks for wins (27) and CCAA victories (17). UCSD won its first ever conference regular season title, second CCAA Tournament crown, and advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game for the second consecutive year.

Klie amassed 1,524 points and 625 boards over his career, the most by any Triton since UC San Diego moved up to NCAA Division II for the 2000-01 season.

Off the court, Klie, who hails from Anchorage, Alaska, graduated with a 4.0 GPA as a Bioengineering major. He was honored as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America of the Year, just the second Triton ever to boast the distinction. Klie earned many other academic awards during his 2016-17 campaign, including CCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NABC Honors Court, CCAA Winter All-Academic, UC San Diego Athletics All-Academic, UCSD Athletics Honor Roll, and UCSD Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete recognition. He was also the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
