RIVERSIDE, Calif. -  The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams started the season in strong fashion Friday evening as each recorded second-place finishes at the Lancer Invitational at California Baptist University.

The UC San Diego women’s team finished with 49 points, while the 24th-ranked men recorded 41 points.

Triton junior Samuel Blake took second place overall on the men’s side with a time of 18:46.8. He missed a first-place finish by just over two seconds behind CBU’s Michael Lowrie (18:44.4). Senior Garrett Lepine and freshman Elijah Horwitz also recorded top-10 finishes, with Lepine (19:12.1) placing seventh and Horowitz (19:18.9) taking ninth.

On the women’s side, senior Kristin Semancsin (San Diego/Valhalla HS) paced the Tritons with a fourth-place finish (14:50.9), while fellow senior Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) placed ninth with a time of 15:22.6. Senior Merin Arft finished just outside of the top-10, as her time of 15:31.0 was good for 11th place.

“We are really happy with the effort put out by both of our teams," said head coach Nate Garcia. "They challenged themselves well against the course, the elements and a pair of excellent teams.  Cal Baptist is extremely good and we got a good measure of where we are as a team.  We know we have work to do but I am pleased with what we saw today and feel like we are on track to be even better in the coming months".

UCSD continues its season on Sept. 16 when the Tritons participate in the University of San Diego Invitational.
