No. 12 Tritons Suffer Two Losses on Second Day of Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. -Twelfth-ranked University of California San Diego dropped both of its games on the final day of the Triton Invitational Sunday at Canyonview Aquatic Center. UC San Diego lost to ninth-ranked Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) favorite UC Davis by a score of 11-5, before surrendering a 13-2 decision to No. 13 UC Irvine.

After the two-day tournament, UCSD falls to 1-3 on the season. The Aggies improve to 3-1 and the Anteaters stand at 2-2.

Both teams played for a physical 32-minute period. However, UCD capitalized on six of 10 power-play situations while the Tritons would only score on two of 12, resulting in an 11-5 defeat for UCSD.

The Tritons outshot the Aggies 32-19 but could only put five goals past UCD goalkeeper Jonah Addington. Addington made 10 saves and collected a steal.

Sophomore Skyler Munatones led the Tritons’ with two goals including a made five-meter penalty shot in the third quarter. Sophomores Kacper Langiewicz, Calder Hilde-Jones and Noah Carniglia also scored one a piece.

The Aggies put five goals away on power-play opportunities in the first half, taking an 8-2 lead.

UCSD outscored UCD 3-1 in the third frame with man-up goals from Langiewicz and Carniglia, followed by Munatones’ made penalty shot.

The Tritons couldn’t find the back of the net in the fourth frame and fell, 11-5.

Junior Sam Thompson made six saves in goal, while Addington grabbed 10.

UCSD had 12 power-play opportunities but only managed to score on two of them, ultimately suffering an 11-goal loss at the hands of UCI.

The Tritons' two goals came from freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt in the second quarter. Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored unassisted on a power play at the 5:49 minute mark before finding the back of the cage two minutes later on another 6-on-5 situation, this time receiving a pass from Carniglia.

The Anteaters jumped out to a five goal lead from the start and held on to the lead for all four quarters. UCI shut out UCSD in the first, third and fourth quarters and outshot the Tritons, 35-25.

Thompson had 12 saves in goal while the Anteaters’ goalkeeper Matt Matijevic made 12 stops.

Lovre Milos led UCI in goals, scoring four.

Next, UCSD will travel up the coast for three games, Sept. 8-9. The Tritons will face Concordia Irvine in their WWPA opener on Friday at 12:30 p.m., before heading to Malibu to play UC Irvine Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Pepperdine at 3:30 p.m.
