No. 13 UC San Diego Falls to No. 1 Cal
Release: Saturday 09/16/2017

BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt put up a career-high six goals as the thirteenth-ranked University of California San Diego men's water polo team dropped a 20-10 decision to reigning national champion No. 1 California, Saturday afternoon in Berkeley.

With the loss, UC San Diego drops to 3-6 on the season and remains 2-0 in the Western Water Polo Association. First-ranked Cal improves to 8-0.

"We are all disappointed in our performance today," said head coach Denny Harper. "There's a reason why Cal is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, but our defense was not up to the caliber it needed to be. The positives were the play of senior Arman Momdzhyan and Turnbow-Lindenstadt. However, we needed more than just a couple of players to step up today and that didn't happen. Fortunately, another great opportunity awaits this Thursday against USC, the No. 2 ranked team in the country".

Turnbow-Lindenstadt continued his impressive freshman year campaign, as his six goals were also a game-high. Sophomore Skyler Munatones, Momdzhyan, sophomore Kacper Langiewicz and junior Alessandro Valania each had a goal for UCSD.

The Tritons could not slow down the Cal offense, as the Golden Bears jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter. Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored UCSD's two goals during the frame, both stemming from powerplay situations.

Turnbow-Lindenstadt completed his hat trick early in the second quarter, cutting Cal's lead to four goals, 7-3. The Newport Beach product added two more goals for the Tritons, making it a 12-5 game at the half. Turnbow-Lindenstadt was the only UCSD player to score during the first 16 minutes of play.

Cal extended its lead in the third frame socring four unanswered goals before Munatones found the back of the net off a powerplay. Momdzhyan added another goal in the quarter, scoring on a 6-on-5 situation.

Langiewicz opened up the final frame with an even-strength goal before Turnbow-Lindenstadt added his sixth and final of the day on an extra-man opportunity. Valania put one past the Cal goalie as time expired on the clock.

The Tritons return to action Thursday, September 21 for a game against Southern California at 5 p.m in Los Angeles.

Triton notes: The last time UCSD lost by double-digits was 9/3/16 against No. 5 Stanford by a socre of 15-5 ... The Tritons have not given up 20 goals since 12/6/15 against California in the NCAA Championship ... Turnbow-Lindenstadt tallied his fourth hat trick on the season.
