SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Hayden Hui tied for seventh and the University of California San Diego men's golf team placed ninth as the season-opening Sonoma State Invitational wrapped up Tuesday at Fountaingrove Golf Club.

UC San Diego finished with a three-round total of 950 (+86). After shooting a pair of 320s Monday, the Tritons cut 10 strokes and carded a 310 in Tuesday's third and final round, the fifth-lowest total of the 13-team field. UCSD was ninth heading into the last round.

Hui jumped up two spots in the standings as he was tied for ninth following Monday's action. The sophomore finished with a 227 (+11) over the three rounds. He shot 76-76 Monday and shaved one stroke today, firing a 75 in round three. Hui racked up 37 pars during the tournament, the second-most of any player.

Hui's seventh-place finish is the second-best of his career after he started his freshman season with a third at the Johnson Shootout in 2016.

Also competing for the Tritons were sophomore Adam Navigato (t-40th, 78-86-77--241), junior Joel Wermter (t-42nd, 88-80-74--242), sophomore Jacob Johnson (t-47th, 81-79-84--244), and senior Mateusz Kucz (t-60th, 85-85-85--255). Wermter's 74 on Tuesday was the lowest round by any Triton during the tourney.

"We played much better today, improving both our team score and our finish relative to the other teams," said UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "Hayden put together three solid rounds on a tough golf course to finish seventh in a strong field."

Chico State, ranked 20th nationally, won by 17 strokes with an 894 (296-301-297), 30-over par. Sonoma State (302-304-305--911) placed second and ninth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (309-304-301--914) was third.

The victory by the Wildcats broke a four-year win streak for the host Seawolves at their tournament.

Chico's Kelley Sullivan was the individual medalist, topping the 75-player field with a 217 (+1). One stroke behind in second place was teammate Colby Dean, while Elis Svard (+6 222) of Monterey Bay finished third.

Up next, UC San Diego plays at Chico State's Wildcat Classic, which runs Oct. 9-10 at The Links at Rolling Hills in Corning.
