LA JOLLA, Calif. - In front of a raucous crowd of 1,498 fans, the No. 13 University of California San Diego men’s water polo team defeated 19th-ranked Loyola Marymount by a score of 15-5 Wednesday evening at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

With the win, UC San Diego improved to 5-10 overall. The Lions dropped to 3-9 on the season.

Junior Kevin Asplund and senior Arman Momdzhyan each completed a hat trick, scoring three goals apiece. Sophomore Skyler Munatones dished out a game-high five assists while adding two goals and two steals.

Defensively, freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt grabbed four steals while junior Sam Thompson made 12 saves in goal and tallied three steals.

“The guys showed up, we killed it, and everyone did their jobs,” said Asplund. "It’s always a fun environment to play in front of that many people. With that much support, it’s a good time. Thanks to everyone that came out, and go Tritons!"

UCSD held a 36-25 advantage in shots and went a perfect 4-for-4 on power plays.

The Tritons had no trouble getting off to a quick start, tallying five goals in the first quarter. Asplund scored twice in the frame, while Munatones had two assists.

Leading 5-2, Momdzhyan opened up the second quarter with a goal off a pass from junior Alessandro Valania. The Lions’ Matt Braun answered shortly after to make it a 6-3 game. Munatones converted a penalty shot and Valania found the back of the net with less than a minute remaining to give UCSD a five-goal lead heading into halftime.

The Tritons carried their momentum into the second half, outscoring LMU 7-2. Momdzhyan completed his hat trick early in the third quarter, while Munatones and junior Collin Sullivan also had goals.

In the fourth, Turnbow-Lindenstadt and freshman Jack Ranj each scored during power play situations, while Asplund notched his third goal of the night and Valania tallied his second.

Matt Braun had three goals and Dominick Beaudine made 10 saves in goal for the Lions.

UC San Diego will take a short break before traveling to Loyola Marymount for a rematch on Friday, October 6. The contest will count as a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) match and is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
