ARCATA, Calif. - Upping its win streak to three matches, the University of California San Diego defeated Humboldt State in sweeping fashion Friday evening at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 25-13, 28-26, and 25-18.
With its third-consecutive sweep, UC San Diego improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA, good for first place in the league's South Division. Humboldt State dropped to 3-11 and 2-6.
The Tritons hit a season-high .288 (40-10-104) and used a 12-3 advantage in blocks to secure the victory. The 12 stuffs tied for the most by the team this year and it marked the seventh time UCSD has finished with at least 10.
"We blocked well tonight and limited our hitting errors," said UC San Diego head coach Ricci Luyties. "Humboldt came out strong in the second set and had us in trouble, but we made the plays at the end like this team has been doing so far this season. That's a good quality to have in a team."
Individually, outside hitter Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) led all players with 13.5 points on 10 kills, a service ace, and five block assists. She recorded her 11th double-double by collecting a match-high 13 digs.
The Triton middles were solid. Micah Hammond hit .615 with eight kills and zero errors in 13 attacks. She had five block assists. Jessica Rieble also went errorless on the attack, hitting .389 with seven kills in 18 swings while totaling six block assists.
Setter Marie Paris had 30 assists and 11 digs for her third double-double.
The Lumberjacks hit .117 (39-25-120) on the night. Alex Lolland and Lauren Reid had 10 kills apiece, while Sarah Shively had 12 digs.
Tied at 1-1 in the first set, a three-point run put UC San Diego ahead for good. The Tritons had a pair of four-point runs later in the set, the second giving them a 21-9 lead.
The competitive second set featured 16 tie scores and eight lead changes. Humboldt State earned the first set point of the frame after back-to-back kills by Reid gave the 'Jacks a 24-23 advantage. However, UCSD scored the next two points on an HSU attack error and a Colla kill to get to set point at 25-24. The next three points went back-and-forth, tying it once again at 26-26. A Rieble kill and a combined block by Colla and Hammond closed out the set, giving the Tritons at 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw UC San Diego hit .406 (15-2-32), its best attack percentage of the night. The Lumberjacks led early and held an 8-6 edge until the Tritons tallied five unanswered points to take an 11-8 lead. They stayed ahead the rest of the way, with HSU getting back to within a single point just once at 14-13. UCSD then used a four-point run to move to 18-13 and a later five-point spree to get to set point at 24-16. Following two Humboldt points, Colla had a kill to ice the victory.
UCSD is now 19-2 in the all-time series against HSU. The Lumberjacks had won the previous two meetings.
A busy week lies ahead for UC San Diego with three home matches. The Tritons host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 10, Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 13, and Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 14. All three contests are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena.
